As a counselor in training (CIT), my understanding of patience has evolved from simply allowing time to pass to intentionally creating space for clients to process at their own pace. I have learned to slow my responses, tolerate silence, and remain present without rushing toward solutions or outcomes. Patience now guides how I pace sessions and respond to emotional intensity, uncertainty, and vulnerability.
Through clinical experience and supervision, I have become more aware of my own internal urgency and the importance of regulating it to remain grounded and supportive. Practicing patience allows me to better attune to clients’ needs, honor their readiness, and trust the therapeutic process. I continue to strengthen this disposition by remaining reflective, seeking feedback, and approaching each client interaction with curiosity and openness as I grow in my role as a CIT.
The Group Design, Selection, and Screening artifact reflects my developing understanding of patience as a foundational dispositional value in ethical group counseling, particularly when working with individuals experiencing grief. As a counselor in training (CIT), I have learned that patience is essential in allowing adequate time for screening, informed consent, and emotional readiness, ensuring that clients are not rushed into group participation before they are prepared.
Patience supports ethical practice by honoring each client’s unique grieving process, cultural background, and coping capacity. This aligns with ACA Standard A.2.c, as providing clear group information and allowing time for questions promotes informed, developmentally appropriate decision-making. Additionally, patient pacing of group structure, membership, and emotional disclosure helps prevent potential harm, consistent with ACA Standard A.4.b, which emphasizes the counselor’s responsibility to avoid actions that may negatively impact clients.
